This Calls for the Willhelm Scream
I just watched the trailer for the new Sherlock Holmes movie and I can't decide if it's awesome or horrible. (The title of this post comes from the song by Possible Oscar.)

That looks like a dirty, dirty dawg of a film, but one I'd catch in a matinee with an airplane bottle of SoCo.

I vote awesome. :)
But then I'm not a Sherlock Holmes fan. If I were, I might be offended.

I'm far from obsessive about him, but I've always liked the character and the stories. I think what scares me the most is the uncanny resemblance to the League of Extraordinary Gentleman movie.

LoXG: yes, that. URGH. Getting Holmes wrong in exactly the way the movie of LoXG gets the comic LoXG wrong.

It's the reasoning that bugs me: "Hey, LoEG was so successful, let's do Sherlock Holmes the same way!"

Is it the Sherlock Holmes of literature? Certainly not.

Does it look like a heck of a lot of fun? It certainly does to me.

Actually, it may be closer than you think. The Sherlock Holmes of literature was something of a degenerate badass. It's been forever since I read them, but he was a renowned pugalist and on dangerous cases he always made sure that Watson had his gun. Not to mention the cocaine addiction and the fact that he did some rather insane things simply because he was bored. Remember that the Basil Rathbone movies tended to be heavily sanitized. My hope is that they just took all the exciting action scenes and packed them into the trailer to make it look like an action adventure movie to draw in the masses.

All that being said, yeah, I'm probably going to see it.

I recall one story ending with Holmes bored again and reaching for the cocaine bottle. Obviously, the man should be played by Johnny Depp. ;')

Huh. Not the Holmes I'm used to, but could be fun. Also, with Downey Jr and Law I'm more willing to risk it. ;)

I think as a sherlock holmes movie, it's going to be utter pants.

As an action/adventure film, I'm betting squee fest :o)

My plan is to pretend that this is a different Sherlock Holmes, one whose only resemblance to the other is a few coincidences of name.
